| My mail box security ? |
|
For your safety and tranquility, NTICA.com's mail boxes are protected from virus and spams thanks to OVH antivirus
and antispam filters. Anyway, you should know that no antivirus nor antispam are 100% effective.
Please keep your password secret, you are the unique reponsible of it. If you should forget it, NTICA will not be
able to give it back because it is encoded, thus even the administrator won't be able to spy your account. All
passwords are crypted with MD5 algorithm. Here is what the admin sees for the password 'testeur': 8815b7196884f2d17ffd001eca8f0d63.
You can change your password on our website. It is advised to change it from time to time.
A good password should not be easily guessed. Avoid password that is egal to your login or any password of this kind:
- darling
- password
- pass
- mymail
- henry2004
You'd better choose a password that means nothing but that is understandable to you, just like:
- ju04berts07 (JUlia 04(the 4th) roBERTS 07(of July))
- j14789632r (drawing a square on the numpad starting with # '1' and adding the initial at the ends)
Crackers often use the BRUTE FORCE method to break into an account. This method is to force the access by testing
lot of password automatically generated from a existing multi-lingual dictionnary and using rules for words combination.
Thus, to be hardly cracked, your password shouldn't contain known word or combinations.

| How to avoid spams ? |
|
What is a spam ?
A sppam is a mail sent to a person (or a group of persons) that didn't ask for it. This is often a advertising mail.
Why avoid spams ?
You will soon notice that navigating from site to site, subscribing to forums or filling some forms you will
sooner or later receive email from their host. Receiving 1 or 2 spams is not so annoying. But when you receive
30 per day, it can be a problem: filled mailbox hard to sort good from bad emails... And spams often contain
virus or worms !
Avoid spams !
To avoid them, you must behave good on the Internet, I mean:
- avoid surfing on any unknown website such as cracks or serialz, they often contains links and
popups to virus/spam pages.
- use a "trash" email address, it will only use for subscribing to websites, forums, forms etc...
Your main address is kept for private usage with your friends.
- if you must use your main address on a website, modify it lightly: nospaming-henry@ntica.com
or henri at ntica dot com. The sender will have to modify it manually before sending. You may also use this form to
encrypt your email address:
- if you are using an antivirus or antispam filter, this one will mark your mail by changing its subject field. So create a filter that will delete marked email, or do it manually.

| How to avoid virus ? |
|
What is a virus ?
Just like biological virii, computer virii are codes (softwares) that infect a system (computer), replicate and
try to infect the computer neighborhood. A virus can also be more threatening by spying your system or even destroy
informations that is on the system etc...
How to avoid them ?
Like for spams, behave !
Behave just like mentionned for spams and:
- install a antivirus (Avast).
- if you use Outlook or Outlook Express, install recent patches because they have bugs thath
allow virus to install automatically as mail arrived.
- use mailing software such as: Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera etc...
- use Webmails
- DO NOT OPEN mails from unknown person especially when subject are amazing, curious or no understandable,
these are spams that may contain virii, worms (virus that spread on the network) or trojans(spying your computer and give
access to their authors).
- WATCHOUT AND DON'T TRUST non image attachment files. Main files to be scared of are those
which end with: .exe, .com, .scr, .bat, .pif and .dll . .zip files are compressed folders that may contains those
files. .doc files (MS Words documents) may contains Macro virii.
- optionnally: if your email account have an antivirus or antispam filter, this one will mark
your mail by changing its subject field. So create a filter that will delete marked email, or do it manually.
- optionnally: install an anti spyware (Ad-aware),
it will clean your system from spy softwares that get installed without your acceptation.
- optionnally: if you have a router with firewall, use it. If not, you may use software firewall
such as Zone Alarm. This firewall will protect
your computer from most attempts.
These seem to be complicated, but just try to behave and you can surf in peace.

| What are POP3 and IMAP ? |
|
Most of Emails Hosting providers works with web based/Webmail protocols. This means you have to use their website interface
to read you mails. Webmails are very useful when you need to access to your email from anywhere (at home, at work
or cyber lounges) without the need to install any software.
However, some prefer to use dedicated softwares such as Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird or Outlook.
Such softwares use POP3 and/or IMAP protocols to retreive emails from the server to your hard disk.
POP3 is an old protocol that is still in use nowaday. It is quite simple, the main function is to authenticate
the user, retreive the mails and may leave them on server. No folder management.
IMAP is a newer protocol that features same functionnalities as POP3 and can also allow users to create and
manage folders on the server! So where ever you are, you can access the same email structure.

| What does NTICA mean ? |
| NTICA (pronounced N-TI-CA) I took this cuz it sounds good and was quite short ;-). But this could
mean New Technology of Information and Communication (NTIC). And '@' is for email...
|
| |
| I want to do the samething as NTICA ! |
|
COOL !
Just do it! Choose a cool domain name, check for its availability and buy it at for example
GANDI or OVH.
If you have an ADSL connection or better, you will be able to install you own Linux Server with email and web service.
Then create !
But if you don't want to bother with managing server, just let your service hosted by a pro.
You can also let other personnal hosting service manage it for you.
